Sini Anderson:

A feminist filmmaker and activist, Sini was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2010 during production of her documentary, The Punk Singer. After watching her dear friend, Kathleen Hanna, battle Lyme disease and then—in a weird plot twist— battling it herself, Sini knew her next film was going to be about Lyme disease. Research commenced. Subjects were found. Interviews began. And then Sini realized that Lyme disease is a symptom of a much bigger problem: Women’s health and the lack of gender equality in medicine. Join us as we discuss not only Lyme disease but the problem with healthcare and some of the reasons why women are … so sick.

Weekly Challenge:

Last week was so fun! I found so much comfort in my friends, and I hope you did, too!

This week is another emotional one: Take care of your inner-child! Love yourself full-time. In each moment, of each day, consider how you would treat yourself if you were a young, helpless child. (Would you feed him/her a healthy dinner, put her in the bath, and dress her in comfiest PJ’s, or would you beat her up for not feeling well and call her a loser?) A good trick is to put a picture of yourself up at a young age and remind yourself to treat yourself and tenderly as you would that kid. If you are new to inner-child work, please read my post HERE to get more information and inspiration. This stuff has seriously changed my life you guys! It has been the cornerstone to healing in so many ways. I can’t wait to hear about your progress and your findings.

A bullet to her neck at a bus station in East Harlem, NY, left Latisha paralyzed from the waist down. With two young children at home she had quite the journey ahead of her. Seventeen years later with experiences varying from extreme depression to unbelievable triumphs, Latisha lets us in on how she lives her very best life. Weekly Challenge:

“It’s ok to not be ok”

Beautiful friends, this week’s challenge is near and dear to my heart. It’s simple but totally life changing: Everyday take ten minutes— give or take— to tell someone how you feel (good, bad or indifferent). Tell a friend, a therapist, a family member, a support group, or find someone online who is experiencing a similar struggle as you. And just tell them. If this is totally foreign to you, here are some key words: I feel..
Sad, hurt, angry, overjoyed, grateful, peaceful, content, wild, ungrounded, ugly, beautiful, exhausted, pain, confused…
And then expand if you can. You may want to tell your friends and family that you are practicing this for a week and remind people that you don’t need a response, you just need someone to listen. Another pointer: GO WHERE THE LOVE IS. Please do not call your abusive ex- lover to vulnerably tell them how you feel today. I’ve tried it for you— it sucks!

Kate Rentz is a director and photographer living in Los Angeles, CA.  She’s enthusiastic about the outdoors, culture, travel, art, and human connection.  Kate was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2015 after suffering for 15+ years going undiagnosed. During those 15 years, Kate experienced extreme pain, insomnia, and brain fog which she complained about in countless doctor’s offices. The diagnoses came back varying: Endometriosis,  IBS, and the infamous, “it’s all in your head.” Kate Rentz found the majority of her healing in Flagyl, herbs, ozone therapy, AND the great outdoors.

GO OUTSIDE. Each day, for at least twenty minutes, get yourself out. Whether that means sitting on your stoop and staring at a tree, going for a hike, walking around the block, or going skiing—I don’t care what or how. But get outside during the sunny hours and look at some nature. Your lawn? The bird up there? The clouds? Whatever. I’m going to be in NYC this week so it will be an extra challenge. Giddy-up.

Must-Have Books for Healing

Hi beautiful friends, 

Few things make me happier than passing on something that has changed my life to YOU. Today I’m focusing on my must-reads for healing (from chronic illness.) Unfortunately, as you know, something else I’m passionate about is that we all have different experiences and different cellular structure and different minds, traumas, and pasts so what works for me won’t always benefit the you. I can only hope that something I say or suggest resonates for you and you have a similar feeling of holy-shit-this-is-what-I’ve been-searching-for. Because I so badly want you to feel and be at your most well and joyful, and I know that’s at your fingertips.

When I was bed-bound and raging with sleeplessness, pain, depression, and feral anxiety (just a few of the things), I needed all of the support I could get. Whether that be a text from a friend, a grounding meal, a funny movie, or an inspiring book. The things I could do while alone were my most precious gems in my box-of-tricks—I was alone a lot and self-soothing was both paramount and something I sucked at. The books listed below saved my ass. At first, I couldn’t read because of the terrible anxiety and confusion I experienced, but I could listen. I invested in an audible account, and I really believe that the books I listened to on repeat contributed a great deal to my getting well. As I started getting better, I could read again and books number three, four, and five  kept me moving along my inspired path to recovery.

11. Acupuncture, Cupping, and Herbs, with Michael Niss

East Asian Medicine (AKA Chinese Medicine):

Acupuncture is growing in popularity in Western society—many insurance plans are even covering the treatments. While acupuncture is becoming more and more a part of our common vocabulary around health and wellness, I wondered how many people actually knew just what it was? It’s just one facet of Traditional East Asian Medicine which combines needles, bodywork, nutrition, and herbs to treat an individual as a whole. Taking it one step further, East Asian Medicine is a lifestyle and practice. The study of Chinese Medicine is rigorous and vast. Therefore, many practitioners go on to specialize in one area or another, but it is most beneficial ( as far as I’m concerned) to have a full treatment and learn from your practitioner the different ways you can practice this 3,000 year old tradition outside of the office in a well-rounded way.

I am an amazing acupuncture salesperson. Because I hate it. And I go. Twice a month, almost without fail, you will find me chock full of needless and totally uncomfortable. The thing is… it works. (For me. You know how I believe each individual is different and what works for me might not work for you, but it really works for me.) I don’t know why, and it doesn’t matter. The fact is that I walk away from a treatment consisting of needles, cupping, and massage feeling a whole lot better than when I walked in. Tell me your experience below 🙂

10. Lipedema: The Diagnosis and the Treatments

Lipedema:

Often misinterpreted as obesity, lipedema is a chronic and painful condition where fatty tissue excess builds up  in the legs, hips and sometimes arms. Eleven percent of the female population is suffering from lipedema—an estimated 17 million Americans— and it is almost unknown in the medical community; A 2004 Stanford study showed that most medical students spend less than thirty minutes studying the entire lymphatic system. (I know, it’s shocking.) It is unclear whether the lymphatic system is negatively affected by lipidema or vice versa, but, either way, the lymph nodes are getting strangled by the fat deposits and the greatest suggestion Nichole has is to MOVE YOUR BODY. In order to drain those lymph nodes (that are busy storing all of the icky stuff our body is desperate to expel), the body needs movement. Nichole Smokoff:

“You have to be smarter than the person in the room who has the higher education than you.”

Nichole stumbled upon a website that showed a photo of a woman with lipedema and couldn’t believe that other people looked just like her. At ten years old, Nichole realized that her body was starting to look different from her friends. It took another three decades to stumble upon that photo and get a diagnosis. She has since made it her mission to educate herself and take control where she can over this disease—and that includes educating the public.

Self- Advocacy:

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. Probably because it saved my life. I have always said that I am my own primary care-taker and everyone else is supplemental—including doctors. Someone I agree with once said, “the days of doctor knows best are OVER.”

For the first episode of 2018, I chose to bring on Natasha Cecere a knowledgeable and fierce self-advocate. It’s the resolution time of year, many of you are grabbing life by the balls—taking control where you’ve regrettably released the reins. As far as I’m concerned life= HEALTH. Take your health into your own hands, don’t simply surrender your most precious self to the “white coats in charge.”

In this episode, you’ll learn some easy self-advocacy tips and hopefully feel inspired to take control of your health.

Natasha Cecere:

After facing her own mortality due to a rare reaction to Hepatitis A, Natasha began educating herself on health and has since learned so much about her body and medicine that it is one of her great life passions. Her interest is especially strong in women’s health.

8. In Sickness and Health: How to Thrive Romantically

The Intimidating Combo of Romance and Illness:

Ian and I met immediately after my Lyme diagnosis, but it was another six or seven months before I got really sick. Suddenly all of the adventurous stuff we had bonded over was no longer accessible to me. I remember panicking with my rapid decline: How could I keep up a relationship with seemingly nothing to offer? Who would want me? Surely Ian would leave me soon enough. I didn’t have any of my old tricks to keep him around. But he didn’t leave. Beyond the obvious foundation of young love, there are reasons why we made it work. Work being the key word, unfortunately. It was hard, but it was worth it.

I get asked the question of “how to romance with extreme illness” a lot. So much so that when Eva Fisher and I started Wellness Companions, we were quick to add “Navigating Romance” to our service roster. Having both been in serious relationships within our (serious) illnesses, we knew the strategies that deeply served us and our partners. And, the good news is that many of our tactics were identical. While I always preach finding what works for you personally (and this area is no exception), I can say that I have found that some of the things mentioned in this episode have worked for multiple couples.

I’m quite passionate about the subject. I wrote about it over a year ago when I was getting faced with the judgmental question of how I could be OK with Ian doing an extended trip while I was in IVIG treatment. And I talk to friends and clients about it often. I decided to close out 2017 with this episode— with me and my partner, Ian Jewett, casually discussing what it was like for us to voyage through the worst and the surprising feelings that came up on the other side. I hope to leave you, as always, inspired and informed as the new year approaches and certainly new goals accompanying it. 6. Low Immunity and How Essential Oils Help

The “Low” Immune System:

There are many different versions of the low immune system story, none to be confused with autoimmune diseases (this is a completely separate topic). Today’s particular story started while my guest was in utero. Before Targa Sahyoun came out of the womb, she received three full blood transfusions. (I know, right!?) Her mother had a blood disorder where her blood produced antibodies that were set to attack her fetus’ red blood cells. With the blood transfusions, Targa survived, but was born three months premature, at just two pounds, Targa spent the first three months of her life in the incubator and was resuscitated seven times. (I know, right!?) She is a walking miracle, surviving with far less damage than initially expected—just the ol’ low immunity. Targa battled varying degrees of illness all of her life—the worst bouts occurred at eight years old and 31 years old in the form of mono and meningitis. She was consistently treated with loads of antibiotics furthering her gut issues and therefore taxing her immune system even further. Through trial and error, finding the right treatments and a ton of discipline with her personal self-care regiment, today Targa feels better and stronger than she ever has.

Essential Oils:

Essential oils are a widely used treatment today for ailments across the spectrum. They are the highly concentrated form of the natural oils in plants and extracted using a process called distillation. You can ingest them, sniff them, diffuse them, or rub them right on your skin (after you dilute them, that is). The most important thing is that you purchase therapeutic grade oil.
